Review: Trader Joe's Strikes Again

Updated: Feb 18, 2019

I love TJ's. I love their food, their flower selection, their prices... I'm convinced TJ's is the place where I will meet my future husband. Hopefully, I'll meet him in the kitchen supply aisle, right next to the greatest invention of our time: wax wraps. Many of us were raised with conveniences like Ziploc bags, tin foil, and Saran wrap, but as single-use plastics pile up in landfills and continue to earn their bad rap, substitutes are emerging on the market.

Trader Joe's Wax Wraps

I originally bought these bad boys for my mom to try out since Ziplocs are always on our Costco list, and they're wrapped around half the food in my parents' fridge.

The wraps claim to be easy to clean and that you can use them to wrap everything from sandwiches and cheese to fruit and fresh veggies. Because they're stiff and are a sheet rather than a bag, they look confusing at first. They're malleable, but don't initially stick together like you'd expect. Either way, we gave them a go.

The verdict:

WE HAVE A WINNER. TJ's has outdone themselves again. The wraps keep cucumbers and herbs "fresher than Ziplocs," as my mom said. They also are easy to clean, whether you put cheese or pizza in them. You can also use them to cover bowls of pasta or cookie dough instead of using Saran wrap. My mom loves them so much she's been sending them to our friends in Alaska who are deprived of having a Trader Joe's.

They're about $9.00 for a pack of 3 wraps, while a box of 350 Ziplocs cost $12.00. This seems like a bang-for-your-buck no-brainer. However, when you consider the amount of non-decomposable plastic entering landfills, it may be worth the extra cost, especially when you couple wax wrap use with glass containers for leftovers.
